Performance or Participation for Children – Where to Draw the Line?
Superior performance is a trait synonymous with successful athletes. It is since the 1970’s Olympic Games that this competitive component was thrust into the limelight, leaving almost only a miniscule significance between success and failure. As primary health care providers with a special interest in sport performance and injuries, we are approached by aspiring athletes on our role in procuring that extra competitiveness to facilitate enhancing their performance. At times both parent and child are exposed to confusing and conflicting information. Consequently it is not an uncommon trend in our practices to have an overzealous parent of the practice member to seek ways in which they can contribute to their child’s competitive edge in sport. It is at this stage that the young athlete can either excel in their sport of choice or be plagued by a plethora of injuries. In order to equip the professional to confront this situation effectively, Angelo Battiston will present: Performance or Participation – where to draw the line.
